Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach designed to address and heal trauma, stress and other psychological difficulties by focusing on physical sensations and bodily experiences. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, the central idea behind SE is that traumatic experiences can become trapped or “stuck” in the body, leading to a range of emotional, physical and psychological symptoms.
The approach doesn't necessarily require clients to relive or recount the traumatic events in detail, but rather focuses on creating a safe space for the body to complete the natural self-regulation process that was interrupted during the traumatic experience.
SE is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities, such as Rolfing, and can be applied to a wide range of trauma-related conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and even chronic pain.
Please note: SE sessions can be held online. If you would like to book an online session contact Kelly directly.
What does an SE session look like?
During a session, which can be experienced seated, lying down or a combination of both, individuals are invited to notice and be curious about body sensations and emotions that might show up in relationship to past and present experiences. Slow and mindful attention to one’s body responses in a safe environment helps bring the nervous system back into balance.
SE promotes a sense of agency and resiliency through helping one renegotiate physiological responses to traumatic memories or triggers. Learning to track the up regulation and down regulation waves of one’s own nervous system allows for increased coherency in both mind and body. Sessions often involve subtle movement and supportive touch to encourage a feeling of safety.
